Regular readers of this blog will know that I am giving up all alcohol throughout 2012 (all 366 days) to  raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and Cancer Research UK. I am also using my year without beer to “reboot” my health and one of the key tools I am using is “Juicing”.

Juicing fresh fruit and vegetables is an easy way to provide the body with a vast array of living, vital nutrients. I start most days with a green smoothie, typically containing apples, pineapple, celery, cucumber, spinach, wheatgrass and avocado. There is no way I would ever eat all that for my breakfast, but juicing it enables my body to get all the nutrients, vitamins, minerals and enzymes in a simple liquid form.

If you want to learn more about the health benefits of juicing I highly recommend watching the documentary “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead“, an inspiring film that chronicles Joe Cross on a personal mission to regain his health. More than 7 stone (100 pounds) overweight, loaded up on steroids and suffering from a debilitating autoimmune disease, Joe Cross is at the end of his rope. With doctors and conventional medicines unable to help long-term, Joe turns to the only option left, the body’s ability to heal itself. He trades in the junk food and hits the road with a juicer and generator in tow, vowing only to drink fresh fruit and vegetable juice for the next 60 days. Across 3,000 miles Joe has one goal in mind: To get off his pills and achieve a balanced lifestyle. Along he travels he also meets Phil Staples, who weighed in at 429 lbs (30 Stone 9 lbs); a cheeseburger away from a heart-attack. Phil Staples also goes on a juice fast, with some amazing results including losing over 4 stone (61 pounds) in just 30 days!

Here is a short YouTube video by Joe Cross, talking about the benefits of juicing:
